Ouster's Rev8 Lidar Captures Full Color and 3D Depth in One Sensor — No Camera Required
Ouster unveiled its Rev8 lidar platform on May 4, using Single Photon Avalanche Diode technology to simultaneously capture 48-bit color imagery and 3D depth data in a single sensor, targeting autonomous vehicles, robotics, and security applications.
Ouster launched its Rev8 lidar platform on May 4, and the headline claim is straightforward: one sensor that does what previously required both a lidar and a camera, simultaneously, in a single unit.
The Rev8 lineup covers four form factors — OS0, OS1, OS1 Max, and OSDome — and uses Single Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) photodetector arrays as its core technology. SPAD sensors are more light-sensitive than the conventional avalanche photodiodes used in most commercial lidars, which is what enables the color capture without a co-mounted camera.

- 116 dB dynamic range — handles both direct sunlight and dark tunnels without clipping

CEO Angus Pacala framed it bluntly: “there’s no reason one sensor can’t do both.” Samples have already shipped to existing customers; general orders opened May 4.
Why This Matters for Robotics and Autonomy
The standard perception stack for autonomous vehicles and industrial robots uses lidar for geometry and cameras for semantic context — object classification, lane markings, traffic signs. Fusing those two data streams requires calibration (extrinsic calibration between sensor coordinate frames), time synchronization (cameras and lidars run on different clocks), and additional compute.
A sensor that produces color and geometry in a single registered capture eliminates the calibration and sync problems at the hardware level. The point cloud already contains color per point — no fusion step required. That simplifies the entire perception pipeline, reduces potential failure modes, and cuts the BOM cost of deploying two separate sensors per field of view.
For robotics applications specifically, where size and weight matter at the joint and end-effector level, eliminating the camera is meaningful. The OSDome variant, designed for 360° surround coverage, now provides full-color situational awareness in a single unit.
Competitive Context
Lidar has been commoditizing fast. Luminar, Innoviz, Hesai, and Cepton (now Intel) are all competing in the automotive space with different range, resolution, and cost trade-offs. Ouster’s merger with Cepton in 2023 brought additional automotive supply chain relationships, and the Rev8 platform is clearly positioned as a product that can address both automotive and non-automotive markets from the same hardware family.
The 500-meter range on the OS1 Max puts it in contention for highway autonomy applications where long-range forward detection is critical. The color capability opens the non-automotive market — industrial inspection, security perimeter monitoring, infrastructure mapping — where machine vision color has historically been a camera-only proposition.
The SPAD Bet
SPAD-based lidar is not new in research, but Ouster is one of the first companies to productize it at this scale and spec level. The technology’s core advantage is single-photon sensitivity: it can detect individual photons, which means longer range, better performance in adverse weather, and — as the Rev8 demonstrates — the ability to pick up color information from the same return signal used for ranging.
The trade-off is manufacturing complexity and yield. Ouster hasn’t disclosed pricing for the Rev8 line, which will determine whether the sensor economics work for volume robotics deployments or remain in the premium tier.
If the price points land competitively, the Rev8 is the kind of sensor that rewrites a perception stack assumption that the industry has held for over a decade.
