Anthropic Launches Claude Computer Use on macOS — Your AI Can Now Control Your Mac
Claude can now point, click, and navigate macOS autonomously. Available to Pro and Max subscribers as a research preview, the feature turns Claude into a hands-free digital coworker.
Anthropic shipped Claude Computer Use for macOS on March 23. Claude can now control your Mac — pointing, clicking, opening files, using the browser, and running dev tools — without any setup required. It’s available today as a research preview for Claude Pro ($17/month) and Max ($100–$200/month) subscribers.
The mechanic is straightforward: when Claude doesn’t have access to the tools it needs through its standard integrations, it falls back to operating your screen the way a human would. It reads what’s on the display, moves the cursor, clicks buttons, types into fields, and navigates between applications. Think of it as giving Claude the same access as someone sitting at your desk.
How it works in practice
In Claude Cowork and Claude Code, you enable computer use and assign a task. Claude then executes multi-step workflows across applications — filling spreadsheets, running terminal commands, navigating web forms, editing documents. The key differentiator from previous automation tools: Claude understands context. It can read an error message, decide what to do about it, and course-correct without you intervening.
Anthropic paired this with Dispatch, released last week, which lets you assign tasks from your iPhone and return to finished work on your Mac. The combination creates a workflow where you can hand off work to Claude while you’re away from your desk.
Safety guardrails
Claude asks for permission before performing actions. Anthropic explicitly advises against using the feature for sensitive information during the research preview. The system includes injection scanning and permission prompts before high-impact operations like file deletion or sending messages.
This is a calculated move in the AI agent race. OpenAI’s GPT-5.4 launched with native computer-use capabilities in the API earlier this month. Google’s Gemini has been testing similar screen-interaction features through Project Mariner. Anthropic’s advantage is the desktop-native integration — Claude runs locally on your Mac rather than through a browser-based interface, which means lower latency and access to native applications.
The bigger picture
Computer use is the bridge between chatbot and agent. A model that can only respond to text prompts is fundamentally limited by the integrations someone built for it. A model that can operate any application on your screen has, in theory, access to every tool you have access to.
The limitation is speed. Claude operating your Mac is slower than a human doing the same tasks manually for simple operations. The value shows up in tasks you’d rather not do at all — repetitive data entry, multi-step workflows across applications, or tasks that require waiting and checking back. Anthropic is betting that “slower but autonomous” beats “faster but requires your attention.”
Windows support is planned but has no announced timeline.
