Claude Cowork Leaves the Desktop: Anthropic Brings Its Agent to Mobile and Web
Anthropic expanded Claude Cowork beyond the desktop app to web and iOS/Android, letting tasks start on a laptop and finish on a phone. Usage data shows 90%+ of Cowork sessions aren't coding at all.
Anthropic pulled Claude Cowork off the desktop and put it everywhere. As of Tuesday, July 7, the agentic work tool is rolling out in beta to web and mobile — starting with Max subscribers — after living exclusively in Anthropic’s desktop app since launch.
The pitch is cross-device continuity. Start a task from your desk, get a status update on your phone, and pull the finished output later — even with the laptop closed. Chat and Cowork now share a single home tab on web and desktop: one sidebar, one search, one place for Projects and Artifacts. The desktop app isn’t going away; it stays the option for deep work that needs local file and browser access. Mobile access lives in the sidebar of Anthropic’s iOS and Android apps.
The rollout comes with a usage-limit extension: Cowork limits stay raised through August 5 to cushion the transition.
What’s more telling than the feature itself is the data Anthropic released alongside it. An analysis of 1.2 million anonymized Cowork sessions across more than 600,000 organizations, taken from late May, found software development made up just 8.7% of usage. Business process and operations work — reports, checklists, spreadsheets — was the largest category at 33.4%, followed by content creation and copywriting at 16.4%.
That’s a real signal about where agentic AI adoption is actually landing. Anthropic built its reputation on Claude Code and coding agents, but the data says the bigger near-term market is knowledge work that has nothing to do with a terminal: ops teams running recurring reports, marketers drafting proposals, analysts assembling spreadsheets. Anthropic’s own framing: “the use of AI for everyday business work is on the rise, and the kinds of tasks people are finding it most helpful for are coming into focus.”
It also puts Anthropic in more direct competition with general office-productivity plays from Microsoft and Google, not just other coding-agent vendors. A mobile-first agent that hands off long-running background tasks is a different product category than an IDE extension, and Anthropic is now shipping in both lanes simultaneously.
For teams already on Claude Max, the practical move is to start testing Cowork on mobile for status checks on already-running desktop tasks rather than kicking off new work from a phone — the desktop app still has the file and browser access mobile lacks. Broader plan availability is expected in the weeks following the Max rollout, per Anthropic’s own beta timeline.
