OpenAI Codex Adds 6 Business Role Plugins, Reaches 5 Million Weekly Users

OpenAI expanded Codex on June 2 with six role-specific business plugins, opening the platform to non-developer knowledge workers for the first time. The plugins cover data analytics, creative production, sales, product design, public equity investing, and investment banking — each bundling purpose-built app integrations rather than offering a generic API surface.

The launch ships 62 integrated applications out of the box. Snowflake and Salesforce handle the analytics and sales plugins; Figma covers product design; HubSpot underpins sales workflow automation; FactSet powers the investing module alongside banking-specific tools. Across all six plugins, users get 110 automated skills with zero custom setup.

Weekly active users have reached 5 million — a 6x increase since the desktop launch in February. Knowledge workers now represent roughly 20% of the user base and are growing 3x faster than traditional engineering users. That asymmetry signals where OpenAI sees its largest untapped market.

Two new output modes ship alongside the plugins. “Sites” lets Codex publish work as hosted interactive web applications, with direct partnerships integrating Wix, Replit, Lovable, and Figma as the rendering substrate. “Annotations” adds inline editing of documents, spreadsheets, and slides — turning Codex output into something directly editable within the same workflow.

OpenAI confirmed that Codex will be embedded inside ChatGPT “in the next few weeks,” which would give the agent-driven automation layer direct access to ChatGPT’s 500M-plus user base. The product launched as a developer-only tool; this expansion is the first explicit pivot toward non-technical buyers at scale.

The competition context is real. Microsoft Copilot has been attacking the same knowledge-worker segment since early 2025. Salesforce Agentforce builds vertical AI automation with comparable integration depth. Google Workspace’s Gemini layer already lives inside Docs and Sheets. OpenAI enters these battles with the largest installed base but a later start on enterprise integrations.

For teams already using Codex for code generation, the plugins require no workflow changes — they layer onto existing setups. For organizations that haven’t adopted Codex yet, the business plugin tier lowers the barrier significantly. You no longer need to be an engineering team to justify the spend.
