Intel Ships Arc G3 — Its First Chips Purpose-Built for Gaming Handhelds

Intel launched the Arc G3 and Arc G3 Extreme on May 28, its first processors designed from the ground up for gaming handhelds rather than adapted laptop silicon, directly challenging AMD's Ryzen Z2 dominance in the portable gaming market.

Intel Ships Arc G3 — Its First Chips Purpose-Built for Gaming Handhelds

Intel shipped its Arc G3 processor family on May 28, the company’s first chips designed from the ground up for gaming handhelds rather than laptop silicon repackaged for portable play. The move is Intel’s most direct challenge yet to AMD’s Ryzen Z2 lineup, which has dominated every major gaming handheld device since 2023.

The Arc G3 is built on Intel’s Panther Lake architecture with a 14-core CPU layout (4P + 10E) and 12 Xe3 graphics cores from the Lunar Lake engine. The Arc G3 Extreme pushes to 14 Xe3 GPU cores and 32 GB of LPDDR5X at 8533 MT/s, with a configurable 15–35W TDP range that OEMs can tune for passive cooling or performance mode.

Three OEMs launched hardware on day one:

  • Acer Predator Atlas 8 — 8-inch screen, vapor chamber cooling, confirmed $699 launch price
  • MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ — 8-inch OLED display, RGB trim, targeting content creators and streamers
  • OneXPlayer X3 — 8.8-inch screen, the largest handheld in the launch lineup

Independent benchmarks on the G3 Extreme show it within 8% of the Ryzen Z2 Extreme in 1080p gaming (3DMark Speed Way) while holding 28W without thermal throttling — 12% better sustained performance in the Atlas 8’s chassis. That sustained TDP advantage compounds over long gaming sessions where the Z2’s smaller die struggles more with heat buildup.

The battery story is less clean. At peak 28W sustained, the G3 Extreme draws 18% more power in video streaming and content workloads than the Ryzen Z2 Extreme. For users who mix gaming with video playback between sessions, AMD-based devices still deliver better battery life per charge.

Intel ships these devices with XeSS 2.0 super-resolution enabled by default, which compensates for native resolution weaknesses at higher frame rates. The tradeoff is latency compared to DLSS 4 on NVIDIA hardware, though at this price bracket no handheld ships with a discrete GPU.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 was not included in launch benchmarks — a strategic omission given Qualcomm’s push into gaming handhelds with the Snapdragon G3x platform. Expect independent comparisons within weeks.

Arc G3 hardware availability begins today across the US, EU, and Japan.
