Apple’s WWDC 2026 keynote lands Monday, June 8 at 1 p.m. PT, and the story this year isn’t about any single feature — it’s about Apple’s relationship with AI fundamentally changing. iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, and watchOS 27 are all expected, but the headline is a rebuilt Siri powered in part by a custom Google Gemini model, plus a policy shift that lets users set non-Apple AI services as system defaults.
The Siri Overhaul
Bloomberg’s reporting ahead of the event indicates Apple will pay Google roughly $1 billion per year for a custom 1.2-trillion-parameter Gemini model to power Siri’s chatbot capabilities. The rebuilt Siri in iOS 27 is described as a full AI assistant: persistent conversation history, contextual memory across apps, multi-step reasoning, web search, content summarization, image generation, and file analysis.
That’s not an incremental update to the voice assistant. The current Siri is fundamentally a command router — you tell it to do something specific and it either does it or fails. The iOS 27 version is being framed as a genuine reasoning system that can hold context and work through problems.
A dedicated Siri app is expected, with an “Extensions” feature that connects to third-party apps and services across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS 27.
Third-Party AI Defaults
The more structurally interesting change: iOS 27 will reportedly let users set third-party AI services as defaults for Writing Tools and Image Playground. That means you could theoretically route Writing Tools through Claude, ChatGPT, or another model of your choice rather than being locked into Apple Intelligence.
This parallels the browser and default app changes Apple was forced to make for EU compliance — except this one appears to be a voluntary decision ahead of anticipated AI market regulation rather than a reaction to an enforcement action.
iOS 27 Feature Highlights
Beyond Siri, the expected iOS 27 changes include:
- Photos app generative tools: three on-device tools — Extend (generative fill), Enhance (smart auto-adjust for quality, lighting, and color), and Reframe (perspective shift for spatial photos)
- Performance and stability focus: iOS 27 is being internally described as a “Snow Leopard” release — the 2009 macOS version that prioritized under-the-hood fixes over visible new features
- iPhone Fold support: side-by-side apps when open, standard iPhone layout when closed. The foldable iPhone is expected to launch alongside the iOS 27 software
- Compatibility: iPhone 12 and newer supported; iPhone 11 losing support
Developer Implications
For developers building AI-integrated apps on iOS, third-party AI defaults are potentially significant. If Apple opens the Writing Tools API to third-party models, apps that route writing assistance through their own model instead of Apple Intelligence become first-class citizens rather than workarounds. That’s a meaningful distribution channel for any AI API that targets iOS developers.
